Description
The Austrian 20 Kronen Gold Coin is a historic gold coin originally issued by the Austro-Hungarian Empire between 1892 and 1915 during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It is one of the most recognizable European gold coins and remains popular among collectors and investors.
The obverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, surrounded by the inscription “FRANC IOS I D G IMP AVSTR REX BOH GAL ILL ETC ET AP REX HVNG”, which translates to “Franz Joseph I, by the grace of God Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia, Galicia, Illyria and Apostolic King of Hungary.”
The reverse displays the imperial double-headed eagle of the Austro-Hungarian Empire holding the sword and orb, crowned with the imperial crown. Below the eagle appears the denomination “20 CORONAE” and the year of issue.
The coin is struck in .900 fine gold and contains approximately 0.196 troy ounces (6.097 g) of pure gold, with a total weight of 6.775 grams and a diameter of about 21 mm.
Although the original coins were minted until 1915, the Austrian Mint later produced restrikes dated 1915, which are commonly available on the market today.
Because of its gold content, classic design, and historical significance, the Austrian 20 Kronen coin is widely appreciated both as a bullion investment and a collectible numismatic piece.
The Austrian Mint is the official mint of Austria, and one of the largest government mints for precious metals in Europe. The mint produces Euro denominated coinage for the EU in addition to precious metals products. The 100 Corona gold coin is minted by the Austrain Mint as well as the Philharmonic series of coins, which are available in gold, silver and platinum. The Austrian Mint is the only mint to issue a Euro denominated bullion coin series.
Each coin comes in a plastic slip. 20 or more coins come in a tube.
